Optical 3D Surface Scanning

3D scanning is the process of analyzing a real-world object or environment to collect three-dimensional data of its shape and possibly its appearance (e.g., color). The collected data can then be used to construct digital 3D models.

Optical 3D surface scanning

With our Artec Space Spider and Artec Micro we can optically scan objects such as skulls and bones for morphometric analysis, outreach- and teaching projects as well as 3D-printing. The method is non-destructive and quick.

The Artec Space Spider is a high-resolution 3D scanner based on blue light technology. It is perfect for capturing the surfaces of objects with intricate detail.

  • 3D resolution: up to 0,1 mm
  • Colors: 24 bpp

The Artec Micro uses the same technology but operates at a higher resolution. This scanner is best suited for relatively small objects.

  • 3D resolution: up to 0,029 mm
  • Object size: 90 x 60 x 60 mm

Morphometrics refers to the quantitative analysis of form, a concept that encompasses size and shape. Morphometric analyses of bones are useful in analysing their fossil record, the impact of mutations on shape, developmental changes in form, covariances between ecological factors and shape, as well for estimating quantitative-genetic parameters of shape. Morphometrics can be used to quantify a trait of evolutionary significance, and by detecting changes in the shape, deduce something of their ontogeny, function, or evolutionary relationships. A major objective of morphometrics is to statistically test hypotheses about the factors that affect shape.

Our high-resolution scanner provides various mesh formats and CAD formats including:

  • 3D mesh formats: OBJ, PLY, STL and more
  • CAD formats: STEP, IGES, X_T
  • Formats for measurements: CSV, DXF, XML
